Our take
Echo Dot is the device we recommend when someone wants smart home without a science project. Put it in the kitchen. Set timers. Ask for weather. Dim a compatible bulb. That is the job, and it does the job.
It is not a party speaker. If music quality is the reason you are shopping, buy a proper speaker and add voice later. If convenience is the reason, start with a Dot and only then add plugs and bulbs that actually get used.
Mute the mic when you want it quiet. That is not paranoia; it is how the product is designed. A smart home you distrust will end up in a drawer.
